So this is Christmas…

December 16, 2016

2011-03-21-22-18-53

I have been reflecting on the years gone by and how the lead up to Christmas was once hectic.  Over the last handful of years I have deliberately chosen not to rush out and meet up with people, or rush around and attend “Christmas parties”.  This year I notice that there are no invitations to such meetings and I am much more rested.

I am not sure what it is about this time of year that causes people to become harangued and busy.  The people you love are usually available to you all year to spend time with.  The few who travel to see you (or whom you travel to see) are far more interested in connecting face to face than going to events and shows and entertainment.  It may be a good time to rest and just talk.  Get less busy, get more connected.

I have noticed that my work becomes busier in the lead up to Christmas.  Due to this and the previous rushing around, by Christmas Eve I would be so exhausted I had no energy to talk or connect.  This year I am not rushing around but work remains busy.  The holidays bring to the surface conflicts that have been ignored all year.  If you have been ignoring unhealthy relationships, then now is a good time to clear them up.  Make this the last year that you drag unhealthy relationships through the year with you, make the decision to sort out boundaries as soon as you notice they’ve been trashed.  If you can do this then you will be able to enter Christmas much more mentally rested.

Next year I will talk more about minimalism and reducing the amount of stuff you have, because more people have been asking me about this.  If you have a question, please pop it in the comments below.

I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a fabulous start to 2017!

On becoming trendy…

September 20, 2015

Suddenly over the last few weeks I’ve noticed people talking about living deliberately, actually using those words: “living deliberately”. I realise that this blog has been going for years and now I’m trendy.

Of course, like all fads, this will pass. People who lived out of a shopping bag will fill homes with children, pets and stuff…People who travelled light will stop and work a 9-5 job…People who refused to eat grain will start buying cereal. Such is life, this is how the world works. Looking back we see the hippies, the beatniks, the nerds…all had their day.

So, how has this changed anything for me? It hasn’t. I’m still not clogging the newsfeed with every thought I’ve had, I’m still decluttering on an ongoing basis.

Last week I took some time to visit a tulip festival, playing with my camera, trying to learn new skills. It was fabulous to switch off to work and just focus on colours and wondering around enjoying nature.

Are you living deliberately? Making decisions for yourself that are meaningful and fit into values? If so, feel proud and enjoy!

Overloaded mule

I attended a short seminar on the concept of justice in leadership today. It was not well attended, but the information covered was excellent. There are thousands of books on leadership, there are blogs and podcasts, research institutes and journals. I have never heard it said that justice lies at the heart of good leadership before today.

our ideal selves…

There are days I am my ideal self for whole minutes at a time. What do I mean? Well, we all aspire to be an “ideal self”, which may be that person who pays attention to others, makes soup for the sick neighbour, runs an errand while out to save doubling back, gives to the charity when they appeal, goes for the run at 6am on Monday morning… you get the picture. We all have these ideal selves that we see as who we would like to be.

boundaries…

Great Wall of China

Recently I have had a few conversations about boundaries…how we make them, how we keep them and how we react when they are violated. It’s never easy trying to figure out where your boundaries are, some things seem straight forward (e.g. I do or do not want people to shake my hand when we greet). Then there are other things that are more difficult (e.g. just how long and how loud do I allow the neighbour’s music to get before complaining when it is intrusive?).

on the new cult of productivity…

Mont St Michel

As 2013 came to an end and 2014 began, it seemed that everyone was talking about how to be more productive this year. I heard radio interviews, saw news items…productivity came up in my blog feeds and online news… it seems a new cult has come to town. Unlike the previous cult of consumerism, where there are temples to worship at, productivity is a silent devotion.

Life is like my house renovation…

all gone...

I love my house, but it is very old. Its quite functional for lifestyle, however from time to time I need to upgrade. Currently, this is the bathroom. Decorated in the delightful ’70s decor of baby pink and baby blue, it has served well…however it is the size of a handkerchief.
