a meaningful life…

A new year is underway and everywhere I see busyness… in the midst of that I wondered about how often people lament about the lack of meaning they sense in their lives. Bees live in community, and although you rarely see one sitting about doing nothing (they are always busy), what they create comes from the hive. In reflecting on this, I wrote a short poem.

Meaning… a meaningful life…

meaning does not come from busyness
although busyness is god
so often we seem to live in silliness
giving full schedules the nod

its as if all that history teaches
about community, love and peace
is washed away by dam wall breaches
of flooding advertised needs

and so relentlessly we live
working harder and longer and smarter
yet in it all feel like an empty sieve
no cause yet a martyr

meaning in our lives’ great ocean
stems from the cause greater than ego
exchanging ideas, engaging emotion
being the stage from which others can grow

Are we willing to be part of the path that makes someone else great? Perhaps your meaning lies not in being the one crowned winner on the dais, but in being the person who kept the grass perfect for the others’ race?
